About me

Kathy

Hello, I’m Kathy.

Perhaps you’ve come across my illustrated book Yin Yoga: Potential in Stillness or recognize me as a long-time assistant to Paul and Suzee Grilley, founders of Functional Yin Yoga. Within the realm of Yin Yang Yoga and heart-centered practice, I offer teachings through a functional, anatomy-informed lens.

My approach is shaped by years of direct study and embodied experience, including multiple cadaver dissection labs with Dr. Carla Stecco, Jo Phee, Tracie Eckel, Jules Mitchell, and Paul and Suzee Grilley. I teach anatomy for Yoga Teacher Training programs at Mount Madonna Center and weave the clarity of functional anatomy with the subtle depth of Yoga’s inner teachings to offer a grounded, integrated path of study, practice, and self-inquiry.

I’ve been studying Sanskrit with Dra. María Elena Sierra at the University of Barcelona since 2007, taking elective courses and deepening my understanding of the language and its sound. I’ve also had the honor of reciting Sanskrit for the University’s Celebration of Sanskrit. Alongside this, I’ve studied classical Yoga at Mount Madonna Center and continue my ongoing exploration of functional anatomy and philosophy with Paul and Suzee Grilley.

For over two decades, I’ve been teaching Yoga—in Spanish and English, both online and in person—supporting students and teachers across the world. During my first decade of teaching, I led Vinyasa and Yin Yoga classes throughout Barcelona, the city that became home after leaving Costa Rica, where I was born.

My teaching is rooted in the functional approach and the study of skeletal variation, as taught to me by Paul and Suzee Grilley. Beyond āsana, my personal practice is nourished by chanting, breathwork, mudrā, self-inquiry, and chakra meditation.

Since 2012, I’ve been dedicated to training the next generation of teachers. My journey began as a lead instructor at Zentro Urban Yoga, and over the years I’ve taught Anatomy and Philosophy in Yoga Teacher Trainings at Mount Madonna Center, Grow Yoga Barcelona, and Yoga Studio Barcelona.

Today, I am the founder and lead instructor of 2Y Functional Yoga School, where I direct AXIS, the 300-hour modular Advanced Yin, Yang & Yoga Teacher Training. My programs bring together functional anatomy, Yin and Yang methodology, energetics, and Yoga philosophy to support teachers who seek depth, clarity, and grounded wisdom in their path.

At 2Y, we study the body as a field of awareness: physical, subtle, and causal.

This is why we don’t just study āsana in the physical and subtle expressions but also chakra/cakra meditation, Sanskrit and texts such as the Bhagavadgītā and Yoga Sūtra of Patañjali.

I’m happy you’re here.
Yin & love,
Kathy
